Q&A with Kumar Gopalakrishnan of nThrum mobile camera search

Goobile spoke with Kumar Gopalakrishnan the Founder of 23half who have launched nThrum.

nThrum is an information service that connects users with information from multiple sources such as websites, reference books, online stores, news sources and so on. The information is obtained organically and is not sponsored. For example a text reading of "Formula 1" might bring up information regarding Formula 1 racing events, cars, collectibles, etc.

Goobile: nThrum allows a user to take a photo and have it matched to a server-based backend which links to an offer or advertiser - is this a correct description?

Nthrumlogo KG: nThrum is a free information service that enables users to access categorized information using a camera phone.

Users can access information from websites, reference books, online stores, news sources and more through the service. Users access relevant information by capturing text printed on any object such as a book, sign board, product and so on with the nThrum application installed onto their camera phone.

Most importantly, the service does not require any special tags or codes to be printed on the objects or entered manually.

Thus, nThrum's "one click user interface" provides an intuitive user experience in spite of the restricted capabilities of a mobile phone.

Goobile: Who is your primary market?

KG: To begin with, nThrum is targeted at tech savvy teenagers and young professionals as a quick and intuitive means of accessing information on their mobile phones. At present, the service is offered free to the end user and we will always have a version of the service that is free to the end user.

Goobile: What are your immediate goals?

KG: nThrum is available on compatible phones worldwide and our immediate goal is to introduce mobile phone users to information access beyond conventional search. As users familiarize themselves with the nThrum's new user experience, we will incorporate other advanced features and content into the service.

Goobile: Who benefits most from nThurm?

KG: The mobile user who has experienced the voice only 2G phase of mobile phones and the voice + SMS + ring tone 2.5G phase of mobile phones will appreciate the possibilities enabled by the higher speed data networks and advanced multimedia features of newer phones while using nThrum.

Faster networks and mega pixel cameras need not necessarily mean quicker downloads and sharper pictures.

nThrum exemplifies the new kinds of services that are enabled by such technologies - technologies that improve the quality of life, for anyone and everyone, since almost 1 out of every 10 people own such mobile phones today and number is growing.
